With over 37,000 installations in more than 150 countries, exocad is the world’s leading original equipment manufacturer (OEM) for dental CAD software. Every day, dental technicians, and increasingly also dentists, design high-quality CAD/CAM-manufactured restorations for their patients with exocad’s robust software solutions. More and more people around the world have access to aesthetic and affordable prosthetics. More than ten years ago, that was exactly the vision of the two young software developers Tillmann Steinbrecher and Maik Gerth. In 2006, they met during a joint research and development project at the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research IGD (Fraunhofer IGD) in Darmstadt. The topic was CAD/CAM in dental technology. This year, exocad celebrates its tenth anniversary. On this occasion, CEO Tillmann Steinbrecher and CTO Maik Gerth explain how they developed DentalCAD and founded exocad.

DARMSTADT, Germany: On 21 and 22 September, the second exocad Insights took place—this time in a hybrid format, owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. Around 300 dental technicians and dentists visited the darmstadtium international congress centre in Darmstadt to participate in lectures and an exhibition by 41 partner companies. The in-person component of the event was possible thanks to strict compliance with the federal and state rules for social distancing and hygiene. Around 1,600 further users of digital technologies in laboratories and practices from 55 countries joined exocad Insights 2020 via a live video stream.

When he is not working as a prosthodontist at his practice in Sonora in California in the US, or enjoying his great love of nature when going scuba diving, hiking or skiing, Scherer enjoys speaking at educational conferences of all sizes. At the exocad Insights 2020 event in Darmstadt in Germany, Dental Tribune International met with Scherer to talk about his lecture at the event in which he discussed what dentists can do with exocad, described his experience with the software and explained why digital dentistry is the future.

DARMSTADT, Germany: CAD/CAM software provider exocad has celebrated its tenth anniversary and its newest releases at Insights 2020, which was held on 21 and 22 September at the darmstadtium congress centre in the “City of Science”. An extensive and high-quality programme—consisting of lectures, an exhibition, a live surgery and laboratory sessions—was delivered to participants on-site and online during the first hybrid event of its kind under the theme “A decade of innovation”.
