Dr. Davinder Raju of the Dove Holistic Dental Centre in Sussex, UK, has been internationally recognised by the World Dental Federation (FDI), the principal representative body for over 1 million dentists worldwide, for his approach to sustainability in dentistry. The FDI, which promotes environmental sustainability as one of its key objectives, awarded Dr. Raju for his contributions.
Sustainability is embedded in every aspect of Dr. Raju’s practice, from onsite energy generation with 34 solar panels and infrared heating to the use of eco-friendly materials and equipment. His efforts have also inspired the creation of Greener Dentistry Global (https://greenerdentistry.global), a sustainability hub and accreditation programme available to dental practices globally.
The healthcare sector is responsible for an estimated 4–5% of global greenhouse gas emissions, and dental practices are significant contributors. The main sources of carbon emissions in dentistry come from travel—accounting for over 60% of the carbon footprint of NHS dental services—along with procurement and energy use. Dr. Raju’s practice addresses these challenges head-on by focusing on reducing these emissions through sustainable energy and materials.
Dr. Raju is also addressing the root cause of the issue: the prevention of oral and dental disease, which is the single most important factor in reducing the environmental impact of dentistry. By focusing on prevention, his practice not only enhances patient health but also reduces the need for resource-intensive treatments, further lowering the carbon footprint.
“Sustainable dentistry is a win-win-win. It's better for the planet, better for our patients, and better for our business.~ Dr. Davinder Raju”
In a further act of commitment, Dr. Raju is donating the prize money of 1000 Swiss Francs to the Greener Dentistry Global Reforestation Programme. He and his wife, Subpreet, support the planting of fruit trees to help communities in need generate a sustainable livelihood. Additionally, Dr. Raju is inviting fellow dental professionals to explore the GDG programme for free, offering full access to membership benefits, including a carbon calculator. For every new member, three fruit trees will be planted.
A growing number of patients are seeking eco-friendly healthcare, with a large proportion of millennials and Gen Z prioritizing sustainability. A recent survey at Dove Holistic Dental Centre revealed that 94% of patients would recommend the practice based on its environmentally conscious approach.
Commenting on receiving the FDI Sustainability Award, Dr. Raju said:
“When my wife Subpreet and I established the practice, we were motivated to find innovative ways to improve both the health of my patients and the environment. It is deeply meaningful to be recognised by the World Dental Federation and to have the Dove Holistic Dental Centre acknowledged on an international platform.”
