Johnson & Johnson single-shot COVID-19 vaccine receives FDA approval

A key advisory group of the Food and Drug Administration experts, known as the Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee, has recommended the Johnson & Johnson coronavirus vaccine's approval on Friday, 26 February. This will pave the way for the authorization of this vaccine and its availability at the earliest.

Saliva testing for SARS-CoV-2 takes off

LEIPZIG, Germany: Researchers in India have found that scientific literature supports salivary diagnostics for SARS-CoV-2 infection as an alternative to sampling techniques that involve throat and nasopharyngeal swabs (NPSs). Salivary diagnostic testing has been trialled in numerous initiatives around the world—including recently at Auckland Airport in New Zealand—and healthcare workers at government hospitals in Malaysia will soon begin testing for SARS-CoV-2 using saliva samples.

Cycle Threshold (Ct) value of RT-PCR can tell us if a SARS-CoV-2 infected person can spread disease

Currently, all SARS-CoV-2 detection measures make use of RT-PCR test, and its results are generally reported as either positive or negative, which tells us if a person is infected. However, to contain the pandemic, what we need to know is whether that person is infectious or in other words, 'can he spread the disease?' It's important to know that the RT-PCR test does provide an additional measure of the viral load in the sample. This reading is called the cycle threshold (Ct) value. Evidence suggests that reporting this Ct value (calculated viral load) can assist in a better interpretation of the condition, and also in taking clinical decisions.

Researchers develop saliva-based SARS-CoV-2 test and examine COVID-19 prevalence among dentists

SASKATOON, Saskatchewan, Canada: Researchers from the University of Saskatchewan (USask) in Saskatoon are currently working on two large projects that have recently received substantial federal funding. The first project is aimed at developing a novel saliva-based test for SARS-CoV-2 detection, whereas the second one aims to examine COVID-19 incidence rates among Canadian dentists.
