KRIENS, Switzerland: Ueli Breitschmid, founder and long-time CEO of Swiss oral health company Curaden, died during the night of 1 June after a long illness. The company, based in Kriens near Lucerne, confirmed the news in an official statement.
Breitschmid was a defining figure in the Swiss dental industry. In 1966, he joined the dental business established by his father, Hans Breitschmid, at the age of 21. In the early 1970s, he founded Curaden and developed the now globally recognised Curaprox brand, which gained traction in 1982 with the introduction of CPS 10 interdental brushes. Today, Curaden operates in 94 countries and remains an independent, family-run company focused on individual oral health and science-based care concepts.

From the beginning, Breitschmid dedicated his entrepreneurial efforts to prevention and to promoting a holistic understanding of how oral and general health are connected. In the 1990s, he worked with Dr Jiří Sedelmayer, a Czech dentist, university lecturer and researcher, to develop the iTOP (individually trained oral prophylaxis) programme, which continues to educate dental professionals around the world.
Breitschmid’s daughter Christine Breitschmid, who joined Curaden in 2012, became co-CEO alongside her father in 2020 and now leads the company as CEO. Under her leadership, the Curaden brand and its guiding motto—“Better health for you”—continue to evolve and grow strategically.
The Curaden management paid tribute to Breitschmid in an official statement, describing him as an exceptional entrepreneurial figure: “Ueli Breitschmid could be unrestrained, outspoken, even provocative, and at times he rubbed people the wrong way. But much more often, he was passionate, infectiously energetic, enterprising, curious about the world, enthusiastic and a tireless live wire who could hardly sit still. All of that—together with the deep empathy of someone who truly understood people—made him a visionary entrepreneur and a charismatic patron. He was someone who lived his contradictions openly and turned them into a source of strength, making him truly one of a kind. That’s exactly how we will remember him.”
The tribute continued: “His originality, sharp intellect, occasionally fiery and unconventional manner, and deep human warmth made him a remarkable leader, one who was respected far beyond the boundaries of his own industry.”
The statement concluded: “His life’s work will live on. His values and his vision will endure.”
