MUMBAI, India: Today, FDI World Dental Federation announced that its 2022 World Dental Congress scheduled for 29 September to 2 October in Mumbai will not take place.

According to an official statement released by FDI today, the congress co-host, the Indian Dental Association, withdrew from the organisation of the event. Owing to the limited remaining time leading up to the congress as well as insufficient capacity and resources to organise the congress independently of the host member organisation, FDI was left with no option but to cancel the event.

However, the FDI World Dental Parliament, including all business meetings, will take place in person, the organisers stated. Further information, including dates, times and venue, will be shared with all concerned in due course.

Since 1901, FDI has hosted the World Dental Congress on a yearly basis. Only during the two world wars was the event suspended, between 1915 and 1920 as well as between 1940 and 1945. In 2019, FDI and the American Dental Association welcomed over 30,000 participants from around the world to San Francisco in the US. Owing to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, most dental events for 2020 were either cancelled or postponed. FDI too decided to call off its flagship event in Shanghai in China that year. In 2021, the congress was held completely virtually for the first time, as the circumstances did not allow for an in-person event either.

The next World Dental Congress will take place in 2023.
