LUCERNE, Switzerland: Earlier this year, 43 leading experts from three organisations participated in a unique consensus meeting. The aim of the meeting was to review the latest scientific evidence concerning the treatment of peri-implant soft tissue and to agree on clinical recommendations for the treatment. The results of the consensus meeting will be presented in an interactive live webinar on 17 November.

During the three-day consensus meeting, three working groups were led by the organising committee members Dr Lisa Heitz-Mayfield and Prof. Mariano Sanz. A working group addressing the topics of peri-implant keratinised mucosa was chaired by Dr Frank Schwarz and Prof. Sanz, a group addressing the topic of peri-implant soft-tissue thickness was chaired by Prof. Ronald Jung and Dr José Nart, and the topic of peri-implant buccal soft-tissue dehiscence defects was addressed by a third research group that was chaired by Dr Adrián Guerrero and Prof. Bilal al-Nawas.

The purpose of this consensus meeting was to elucidate key issues related to the peri-implant soft tissue relevant to the maintenance of health and aesthetic outcomes in implant dentistry. A further aim was to evaluate the efficacy of soft-tissue reconstructive surgical interventions using autogenous soft-tissue grafts or soft-tissue substitutes, including the coverage of buccal peri-implant soft-tissue dehiscence defects. The systematic reviews and the corresponding consensus reports were published on 28 June 2022 in a special issue of Clinical Oral Implants Research.

The results of the consensus meeting will be presented in an interactive live webinar on 17 November at 7 p.m. CET. In the webinar, two reviewers from each group will share the group’s findings and discuss their implications for daily clinical practice. Webinar participants will be encouraged to actively discuss the consensus with the reviewers from each working group.

A website was launched in October featuring video interviews with the chairpersons of the working groups and the reviewers from the workshop, abstracts of the published papers and clinical recommendations for the treatment of peri-implant soft tissue.

Readers can register for the webinar, view the video interviews and read the abstracts and clinical recommendations on the website.

The organisations that participated in the meeting were the German Association of Oral Implantology, the Spanish Society of Periodontology and Osseointegration, and the Osteology Foundation. All three organisations share the goal of providing evidence-based education through research in the field of implant dentistry and oral tissue regeneration.
