Coronavirus pandemic is a crisis where the role of experts like Nassim Nicholas Taleb - a risk analyst, whose work concerns problems of randomness, probability, and uncertainty - becomes all the more critical. Read this article by Yves Smith covers the expert opinions given by Nassim Nicolas Taleb on this topic. Taleb is a risk analyst, whose work concerns problems of randomness, probability, and uncertainty. He is the author of best selling books - Black swan, Fooled by randomness, Antifraglity etc.
Coronavirus is a crisis that you can’t leave to the epidemiologists and virologists, because it involves far too many unknowns for them to create a working model, and understandably, without such a model they are lost. Their expertise is useful for their knowledge about the past epidemics, not for predicting what will happen in the next one, certainly not if it’s caused by a virus which nobody knows enough about to build a reliable model. This leads us into a territory, which may not be familiar to the epidemiologists and virologists - the territory pertaining to RISK. Since a virus, and a pandemic, like the one we are currently in, is linked to so many confounding factors and uncertainties, it leads us to the territory of risk management, assessment, engineering, and from there eventually into complex systems. This is where the role of experts like Nassim Nicholas Taleb - a risk analyst, whose work concerns problems of randomness, probability, and uncertainty - becomes all the more critical.
