SINGAPORE: Originally, the 11th International Dental Exhibition and Meeting (IDEM) was scheduled to take place in April 2020 and was then moved to 19–21 June to ensure attendees’ health and safety during the COVID-19 crisis. However, now that the outbreak has become a pandemic and the situation is not expected to stabilise in time for the show, the event organisers have decided to move IDEM 2020 online.
In order to demonstrate that it values all participants and honours the dental community’s need for continuing education and learning, the Singapore Dental Association (SDA), together with the co-organiser Koelnmesse, will present IDEM 2020 as a fully digital experience. The aim is to give participants from across the globe a space to connect, network and engage safely. The platform will provide exhibitors with the opportunity to showcase their products and solutions, as well as offer pre-recorded and live-streamed conference sessions. Dental professionals can still acquire continuing education (CE) credits, verified by the Singapore Dental Council, by viewing pre-recorded and live-streamed educational sessions and lectures.
Current situation demands extraordinary measures
“We take the progression of the COVID-19 virus pandemic very seriously and prioritise the health and well-being of our partners, attendees and the overall dental community,” said Mathias Küpper, managing director of Koelnmesse, in a press statement. “Accordingly, for the 2020 edition of IDEM, we will adapt it into a digital format, so as to align the event to meet suggestions made by relevant authorities and entities.”
SDA President Dr Lim Lii added: “Despite the situation, we have with a constantly evolving global pandemic, through IDEM 2020 we still strive to connect with the dental community. With this adapted format, we remain committed to providing adequate courses in a safe and responsible manner and are confident that our attendees worldwide will be able to effectively engage, learn, gain valuable insights and qualify for CE points.”
Back to live version in 2022
The details of the IDEM 2020 digital experience will be put in place over the coming weeks. Participants can look at the official website for updates and details. IDEM will return to the Suntec Singapore Convention and Exhibition Centre in its established format for the next edition in two years.
In comparison with other countries, the course of the virus has been relatively mild in Singapore. By 24 March, 507 confirmed cases and two deaths had been recorded, according to the World Health Organization.
