BENGALURU – "PEDO CARIE Exploring ECC" is the theme of the 14th Indian Society of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry National Postgraduate Convention. The convention organised by the M S Ramaiah University of Applied Sciences, Faculty of Dental Sciences is scheduled for 9 to 11February 2017. The focus is primarily on early childhood caries (ECC) which continues to baffle paediatric dentists.
Pediatric dentists believe in a comprehensive development of the child. The sequel of ECC is quite damaging in both physical and emotional terms for parents and the child. In spite of extensive literature on the topic, ECC continues to baffle paediatric dentists in its multiple etiology, management difficulties and differential outcomes.
In India, the oral health scenario among children is quite grim. According to a national survey, nearly 70% of school going children in India have tooth decay and over 51 million hours of precious school time is lost due to dental problems alone.
"Due to its multiple etiology, it is essential that ECC be discussed ina forum such as the national convention to bring about greater learning", said Dr. Latha Anandakrishna, Organising Secretary of the post graduste convention.
The convention, spread across two days will host a number of scientific lectures by renowned pedodontists from across the world and India. Dr. Nicola Innes, Professor of Paediatric Dentistry, Dundee Dental School,UK, and Dr. Paula Moynihan Director of the Centre for Oral Health Research at Newcastle University, UK, are scheduled to present on the10 February.
It is interesting to note that convention has given an Indian perspective to the global issue of ECC.
Postgraduate students from dental colleges all over India have had the opprtunity to present their views on ECC through poster presentations and scientific paper presentations.
The convention was inaugurated on the 9 February byHon'ble Minister for Medical Education Shri Sharan Prakash R Patil and Guest of Honour Dr. Swarna Rekha Bhat, Senior Consultant Pediatrics at Mazumdar Shaw Medical Centre, Bangalore. Addressing the gathering Dr. Bhat mentioned that there needs to be better education among the Medcial students regarding dental problems so that they can recognize and refer children for treatment.
Hon'ble Minister for Medical Education Shri Sharan Prakash R Patil said that it is important to note that while there are fewer job opportunities for postgraduates in dental colleges there are enough opportunities in the rural areas where people really need specialty care. He also promised to look into several relevant issues raised by the members of the pedodontic society.
