National Oral Healthcare Sushruta Awards 2016 honors individuals in Dental area

With the introduction of The National Oral Healthcare Sushruta Awards, IDA recognizes and honors the highest standards of excellence in the field of oral healthcare. This would be instrumental in motivating other professionals to strive for greater heights and to contribute more actively towards promoting the profession’s intellectual, creative and ethical value systems. Last year maiden “National Oral Healthcare Sushruta Awards” were presented by Bharat Ratna Late Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam to the achievers from the field of Oral Healthcare. About IDA Foundation Nation Oral Healthcare Sushruta Awards are conceptualized by IDA Foundation to recognize the highest standards of excellence and reward individuals for their outstanding role in providing care. IDA Foundation is a philanthropic organization to address the educational and humanitarian commitments of the Indian Dental Association (IDA).  

Union Minister for Health and Family welfare presented National Oral Healthcare Sushruta Awards and honored individuals in Dental area for their outstanding achievements in the oral healthcare sector.

Despite mandatory warnings and campaign against tobacco, we find surge in tobacco products day by day and these products traps more and more younger generation to turn edicts. Even Cancer can be the resultant disease for such addicts and despite this knowledge, we find the younger generation risking their lives with such bad habits. This being the biggest concern for the nation, Government has planned a special “Anti Tobacco” programme for creating awareness and warning younger generation against such addictions.

The programme is set to start from 25th December 2016 with a launch of a special book on the after effects of such addictions, This was stated by Mr. Jagat Prakash Nadda, Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare while presenting National Oral Healthcare Sushruta Awards” and honor individuals in Dental area for their outstanding achievements in the oral healthcare sector on Friday on 4th November 2016 at Hotel Sahara Star, Vile Parle Mumbai. The function was organized by IDA (Indian Dental Association).

While addressing, Health minister said that “The country has 309 dental colleges and 25,000 students graduating each year. Despite these, many citizens do not get the proper treatment in the said field as they lack awareness on it. It is said that “Oral Health” is the “Total Health” and hence utmost care has to be take for oral health. While urban area has such facilities available for the citizens, masses at the rural level still deprived off from such awareness and hence it is a dire need to take this across the rural India. For this campaign, many NGOs and concerned institutes will have to be included in the programme with a aim that in future, no one would have to suffer from oral health issues.

Mr Nadda gave away 14 awards to best contributors and performers in the field of Oral Healthcare in the presence of Dr. Deepak Sawant , Minister for Public Health and Family Welfare, Maharashtra , Dr. Alias Thomas,National Past President, (IDA) ,Dr. T. N Tilakraj ,President ,Indian Dental Association (IDA), Dr.Vishwas Puranik, National President-Elect , and many other functionaries of IDA graced the function with their august presence along with other distinguished dental professionals.

The National Oral Healthcare Sushruta Award was presented to Dr. Vinay Hazarey for Outstanding contribution by an Individual in promoting Oral Cancer Awareness. Other recipients of the award are Justice Narayana Kurup for Outstanding contribution by an Individual to Tobacco Control, NGO Life Line Express for Outstanding contribution by an NGO in creating Oral Healthcare Awareness, Kalinga Dental College Outstanding contribution by an Institution in providing Oral Healthcare Services, Prevest DenPro Limited for Best Dental Manufacturer. Lt. Gen TK Bandopadhyay for Outstanding contribution by a Defence Personnel in creating Oral Healthcare Awareness awarded, Dr. Ankita Chandra for Outstanding contribution by an Individual in providing Outreach Oral Healthcare Services. Dr. Pramod Patni for Outstanding contribution by an Individual in providing Community Oral Healthcare Services.

Dr. R. K. Bali and Dr. R. Bellie for Sushruta Lifetime Acheivement Award to for Significant Contribution in Indian Dentistry, Patrick Hescot for Outstanding Contribution in Dentistry International, Dr. Sabita Ram for Empowered Women Dentist of the Year, NRI Dr. Gehani Sushruta Lifetime Acheivement Award to for Significant Contributionto Dentistry, Dr. Dinesh Daftary for Excellence in Dental Researach and Dr, Mhaisekar for Outstanding Contribution in Dentistry International.

While addressing Union Minister J P Nadda sought corporate sector and non-government organisations' involvement to make healthcare services available for people across the country. "The provision of healthcare, though primarily the responsibility of the government, cannot be undertaken by the government alone... Corporate sector and NGOs must share the responsibility and supplement the efforts of the government in providing healthcare services," he said.
Oral diseases are becoming the leading health problem these days and are attributed mainly to the rapidly changing lifestyles, wide-spread use of tobacco and increased consumption of alcohol, he said, adding they pose a major threat to our public health. Says Union Minister J P Nadda. He further said that socially and economically weaker sections of the community need to be educated on the importance of oral health and access to dental services in rural areas must improve.

The IDA has set up Oral Cancer Foundation for the early detection and treatment of oral cancer and in this regard a registry for exclusive oral cancer cases is also in place apart from the tobacco intervention initiative, the minister, added. The association has also developed software for the effective management of dental resources personnel which could prove useful to the Health Ministry in monitoring the deployment of dental personnel and shaping oral health policies, he said. The Minister expressed confidence that the tools devised by the IDA to combat oral ailments would make a significant contribution to oral healthcare management.
