Success story of OSI 1st National Implantology Conference, Bengaluru

BENGALURU, India: Osseointegration Society of India, with the theme “Let’s Integrate,” organized its 1st National Implantology Conference from 21st to 23rd June 2024, with the theme CoventionALL to DigitALL. It was an intellectual journey that enriched many minds, strengthened professional bonds, and inspired innovations in the realm of osseointegration.

The conference started with 6 pre-conference courses held on 21st June, which included:

  • Management of Periimplantitis by Dr. Frank Schwarz (Fig 1)
  • Strategies for building a 1 crore practice by Mr. Amol Nirgudkar (Fig 2)
  • Digital implant full-arch planning on Blue-sky Bio platform by Dr. Nehas (Fig 3)
  • Implants in maxillofacial rehabilitation by Prof. Chris Butterworth (Fig 4)
  • Conversion of overdenture to fixed: small equator abutment by Prof. Ahmad Al-Assady (Fig 5)
  • Hard and soft tissue manipulation in implantology by Dr. Mayur Kaushik (Fig 6)

These courses saw around 185 participants altogether.

We had 430 plus registrations for the conference, which included 29 keynote speakers who traveled from far and wide to share their pioneering research and insight, setting a high standard for excellence and collaboration in the field of implant dentistry on the 22nd and 23rd of June. The scientific sessions were divided into 10 broad topics:

Facial Revitalization – PSI & Autologous Rehabilitation (Fig 7)

  1. Dr. Abdul Hameed Attar – From Concept to Reality: Customised 3D implants for craniofacial rehabilitation
  2. Dr. Satyajit Dandagi - Reconstruction and rehabilitation of maxillofacial defects with free vascularised flaps and implants

Implant Practice Management

All the sessions were followed by panel discussions by speakers, panelists, and moderators, providing a deeper understanding of both the theoretical and practical aspects of osseointegration (Fig 24).

Industrial symposiums included: Exploring i-Fix Implants by Dr. Mayur Kaushik and Dr. Neeta Shetty (Fig 25); Evolution of Digital Implantology and Prosthetics by Dr. Navneet Kumar from Dio Implants (Fig 26) and Simplified approach for pneumatized & severely resorbed maxilla by Dr. Jasbinder Singh Teja from Dentium (Fig 27). There were a good number of paper and poster presentations under both student and faculty categories (Fig 27b).

The conference also had the 1st OSI consensus meeting on the topic - Implantology practice protocols in India: A consensus on standardization, headed by Consensus Chairman Dr. Ramesh Chowdhary and 16 panelists Dr. Sankalp Mittal, Dr. Hariharan, Dr. P. C. Jacob, Dr. Anjan Kumar Shah, Dr. Neel Bhatavadekar, Dr. Gunaseelan Rajan, Dr. Manjunath Rai, Dr. Ashvini Padhye, Dr. Rajeev Chitguppi, Dr. Reetika Gaddale, Dr. Swathi Iyengar Singh, Dr. Anupama C., Dr. Neha Bhutani, Dr. Anju Cecil, and Dr. Sahana M. S., which was held on 21st June (Fig 28a), and the compiled report on it was presented to the conference delegates on 23rd June (Fig 28b).

The conference had 26 implant and other companies supporting and participating as exhibitors: DIO Digital Implant India Pvt. Ltd., I-Fix Implants, Dentium, Osstem Implant India Pvt. Ltd., Noris Medical, Marks Biotech Inc, Crest Biologics, MSDI India Pvt. Ltd., Implantswiss India Pvt. Limited, LIDKAR, Dentsply Sirona, Radion, Vijai Dental Depot Pvt. Ltd. Chennai, and Suture Planet (Fig 29, Fig 30, Fig 31).

The inauguration ceremony was held on the evening of 22nd June (Fig 32a) with OSI President and Organising Chairman Dr. Ramesh Chowdhary addressing the gathering (Fig 32b). OSI Fellowships were awarded to 17 fellows, including 2 honorary fellowships (Fig 33). Research grants were announced to encourage research in the field of dental implants. The OSI young research grant of Rs. 1,00,000 was awarded to Dr. Ananya R. M., final-year postgraduate student of the Department of Prosthodontics, Sharavati Dental College and Hospital, Shimoga (Fig 34), and Dr. Chowdhary’s Research Scholarship of Rs. 50,000 was awarded to Dr. Akanksha Y. N., first-year postgraduate student of the Department of Prosthodontics, M. S. Ramaiah Dental College, Bangalore (Fig 35). A special ceremony was held for the presentation of the Presidential Honor to Dr. Gunasheelan Rajan in recognition of his immense contribution in the field of Implant Dentistry (Fig 36). The conference Organising Secretary Dr. Srinivas B. Rao concluded the ceremony with a vote of thanks (Fig 36b).

The valedictory ceremony was held on the evening of 23rd June, with prize distribution for best paper and poster presentations, followed by acknowledging every committee member for all the help rendered (Fig 37, Fig 38). The event concluded with the announcement of the 2nd OSI National Implantology Conference to be held in Jaipur, Rajasthan, in 2025 (Fig 39), and the 3rd OSI National Implantology Conference in Kolkata in 2026 (Fig 40).
