Mourning a luminary: dental fraternity pays tribute to Dr Krishna Nayak

Dr U.S. Krishna Nayak, a towering presence in dentistry and especially in orthodontics, who devoted his life to advancing dental education and care in India, passed away on 3rd December 2024 in Mangaluru. He was 65.

As the Principal and Dean of A.B. Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences in Mangaluru, Dr Nayak transformed the institution into a beacon of excellence, garnering both national and international acclaim. His death was announced by the institute, which did not disclose the cause.

Over a career spanning more than four decades, Dr Nayak was revered not only as an academic but also as a visionary leader. An alumnus of Manipal College of Dental Sciences, he rose to prominence through his unwavering commitment to education and patient care.

Earlier this year, he was recognised as one of the "20 Most Prominent Principals in Higher Education 2024" in India, a testament to his influential role in shaping the future of dental education.

Dr Nayak's contributions extended beyond academia. He served as the National President of the Indian Dental Association and the Indian Orthodontic Society, where he championed advancements in dental practices and policies. His leadership roles also included serving as President of the International College of Dentists (Section VI).

His accolades were numerous and distinguished. In 2014, he received the "Outstanding Professor Award" from the Indian Orthodontic Society. He was honoured with "The Most Proactive Senior Academician" award for 2015-16 and the "Famdent Excellence in Dentistry Award" in 2016. Internationally, he was named "The Best Dental Administrator" at the World Dental Conference in Malaysia in 2019. The Indian Orthodontic Society bestowed upon him its Lifetime Achievement Award, recognising his enduring impact on the profession.

Colleagues and students alike remembered Dr Nayak as a passionate educator and mentor. "He was a highly acclaimed academician and a revered teacher who touched countless lives with his wisdom and kindness," said a statement from the faculty of A.B. Shetty Memorial Institute.

Beyond his professional achievements, Dr Nayak was celebrated for his warm personality and sense of humour. Friends and associates recalled his gracious hospitality and his ability to foster deep, lasting relationships. "He cherished friendships and commitments, bringing genuine joy to those around him," said a long-time colleague.

His passing leaves a profound void in the dental community. Tributes poured in from across the country, highlighting his legacy of excellence and the indelible mark he left on the profession.

The dental fraternity mourns the loss of a luminary whose life was dedicated to the betterment of others. As the community reflects on his contributions, Dr U.S. Krishna Nayak's legacy will continue to inspire future generations of dental professionals.
